Exploring the Inner Life of Learning
What if education could truly nurture the spirit of every child?

Young people today are reshaping what it means to be spiritual.

Global and UK studies show that while fewer young people identify with formal religion, more than ever they are seeking meaning, belonging, and a deeper sense of connection in their lives. Across cultures, a common thread is emerging: this generation longs for authentic relationships, spaces of safety, and opportunities to explore purpose in ways that honour both individuality and interdependence.

Spirituality is an innate, biological human capacity, distinct from religion -"In the entire realm of human experience, there is no single factor that will protect your adolescent like a personal sense of spirituality."- Dr Lisa Miller

“For many young adults, spirituality is no longer about subscribing to a creed. It’s about living in alignment with a deeper truth and acting with integrity in the world.” - Justine Afra Huxley

SIEUK exists to illuminate and support the spiritual lives of young people in a changing world.

We aim to bring together the latest global research, the lived experience of young people, and innovative design practices to help the UK understand how meaning, belonging, purpose, and connection are being reshaped today. By bridging science and culture, and by honouring diverse expressions of spirituality - from faith traditions to nature-based practices, creative rituals, digital communities, and emerging forms of non-religious yearning - we explore how to create spaces where young people can explore who they are, what they belong to, and how they want to live.

Our vision is a UK where every young person has access to the relationships, practices, and environments that nurture spiritual flourishing as a foundation for wellbeing, resilience, and hope.

Our activities involve schools, universities, and communities in exploring:

  • how children and young people experience belonging, purpose, and meaning
  • the importance of our innate connection to nature
  • the impact of spiritual and values-based education on wellbeing
  • the importance of nurturing the inner life of teachers
  • practices and learning environments that nurture compassion, curiosity, and hope
  • how we can optimise the conditions for a more caring and peaceful world
